This past March I meet some amazing girls from theFix during one of Jasmine Star’s Chicago workshops. Lo and behold after talking on facebook we decided to combine efforts and create a stylized shoot together!
Robyn Schwab, Jenny Chavez, Nina Harwick, Dominique Strom, Jill Tiongco, Keren Chookaszian, Nikole Burrel Fasoranti, Zipporah Kapambwe all came together and planned for our stylized shoot to take place in May. From location, vendors, models, colors, ideas and designs… each of us collectively worked together. I had no idea how everything would pull together or even how the shoot would go with this many photographers on location. But after a few sleepless nights, a cut finger and my mind racing a million miles an hour… the fear went away the moment I set down my things at Lightology.
It was like all of us knew each other for years and had be planning this for months. Everyone had something to do and we all were mindful not to step on any toes. Even the owner of Lightology, Gregory Kay was more then helpful when we couldn’t find the light switch!
From that point on we joined into groups and started shooting away. As I was looking at the back of my camera I realized how refreshing it was to really work on capturing those moments I felt like I always was rushed through. It made me focus in on the details and practice how to talk to clients. I’m am very grateful I was given the opportunity to listen to what others in the industry were saying to our models Melissa and Mike. I know sometimes I get my tongue tied… so hearing the girls responses has totally changed the way I talk during my photo shoots now.
Melissa and Mike were a blast to work with. Honestly, I thought they were the best models to have because in fact they were a real couple. Plus, they had just shared their 6th wedding anniversary! Melissa and Mike could not have looked more in love… I melted when editing their photos.
I’m so thankful I had the opportunity to meet and learn from the Photography Stylistas, I know we will all be friends for years to come! So here is my advice for other photographers in the industry… try something new, go out of your comfort zone and share your story. I promise you won’t be disappointed!
